On 24th Sept 2010 at the park crescent conference centre, regents park in London, Milly and Miles Learning Ltd collected the coveted overall gold winner award for teaching resources and educational equipment. Presented by Dr Amanda gummer of fundamentals, the resources were described as an outstanding resource for teachers and early years professionals which support them in planning for a wide range of indoor and outdoor activities. Not only focussed on academic leaning the resources encourage children’s overall development helping them to become well rounded individuals.

The awards exist to identify excellence in the fields of educational equipment, childcare, books and toys for use in professional childcare and educational settings. These settings include private and state nurseries, pre schools, playgroups, childminders, after school clubs, reception classes and infant schools.

According to psychologist, Dr Amanda gummer, “a child’s early years are a rapid period of change; the child develops quickly and needs access to different things t different times”

Children themselves, therefore, are crucial to the stringent testing process. As well as a scrupulous panel of professionals, their input was key in testing every one of the products. Each product was tested in at least two separate settings by children and their carers. Each setting has marked and provided a detailed evaluation of the performance against the criteria. This included appeal to children at both the start and end of the trial; durability; adaptability, educational value, play value and value for money. Milly and Miles gained the impressive and highest score of 98.3% to become the overall category winner. Testers comments included “the book was fantastic using simple language which helped children structure simple sentences. The children found it easy to identify with the likes and dislikes of Milly and Miles”  “the pack worked well in groups and the children especially loved the dolls and the spot mats”

This result is a valuable guide for anyone buying equipment for an early years or key stage one setting.
